What’s on the Dashboard?

This past week was a busy one. Both in the life of our church (launching a new campus, special guest appearance by a famous person, and all the other stuff that goes along with ministry) and at home. Throughout the week I’ve been feeling the tension and even feeling really insecure. Every conversation I would have made me feel like I did something wrong or that I was missing the mark in some way, shape or form.

I was feeling sick, and emotionally drained. I hadn’t been able to wake up early to spend time with Jesus, nor have I been working out. By weeks end, I was done. At some point, I realized that the reason I was feeling so insecure, I was EMOTIONALLY DRAINED.

When I feel insecure or irritable for a few days it means that I need to pause and check what’s going on inside.

What’s Under the Hood?

You ever get a check engine light on in your car? I just got one on in car the other day. What this means is you  gotta check something out in your car. Otherwise, it will break down on you when you least expect it. it’s great to have a check-engine light to help let you know there is something going on.

Our souls also have a check engine light. The check engine light of the soul is our emotions. We need to pay attention to our emotions because they tell us if there is some issue that needs to be addressed in our lives.

Addressing the Dashboard Light.

When I feel insecure I know that there are a few things I need to do to get back to normal.

  1. I need to connect to God.
  2. I need to read life giving books.
  3. I need to take care of myself physically.
  4. I need to connect to life-giving relationships.

Here’s what this looks like for me:

Connect to God.

I try to carve out an hour to spend with God. I journal what I’m feeling, what’s been going on, and I surrender those things to Jesus. Sometimes I’ll take time to go on a walk in the woods, go some place to be alone in silence. I’ll connect to God through spiritual disciplines to position myself to be WITH God. When I started to feel insecure, I realized that I needed to carve out time to be with God through prayer

Connect to Books

I love to read. I love to take time to read, journal what I’m thinking, it feeds my mind to be able to read and think about ideas and how those ideas can stimulate me and transform the way I think and live. If I’m not reading, I’m not growing. When I’m not growing I stop focusing on what’s really important.

Connect to Health

It’s been about 2 weeks since I went for a run. When I’m running on a regular basis I feel pretty good. If I’m not running, I try to do some sort of physical activity. When I’m taking care of my body I am also taking care of my mind and my heart.

Connect to Relationships

I’m a people person. Nothing fills me with life more than spending time with great people. This week I spent time with my wife on a date to go to a concert.

What about you? How do you restore your soul?
